The ’Dank! Merci! Graciás’ program series aims to examine the background of Switzerland, Spain and The Netherlands’ boycott of the 1956 Olympics and to determine whether there is any point to athletes boycotting humanity’s most important public event, the Olympics. When athletes participate in a boycott, what are the consequences in his/her life, career and sports for their country as a whole? What other instruments are available in sports politics to express solidarity?

The second day of the conference is based on the example shown by the previous night’s gala celebration – employing music diplomacy. Music opens emotional channels and also has the capacity to relay historical facts. The goal shall be to survey the international research on music diplomacy; to find more methods for music to make conscious use of soft diplomacy.

We will approach the theme in three main blocks: 1) historical examples; 2) Diplomats’ and artists’ experiences; 3) Together, we will examine possibilities for this scientific area in this region (‘region’ refers to the "Visegrad+ countries" - meaning the Visegrad countries plus the Danube countries).

Jede Minute der Olympischen Spiele und im Allgemeinen jede mit Sport verbrachte Minute, sowie jeder musikalische Ton dient dem Frieden. Es lohnt sich, diese klischeehafte – dennoch nicht minder wahre Feststellung wissenschaftlich zu untersuchen, um bewusst zu machen, welche Möglichkeiten die Musik und der Sport in der Aufrechterhaltung und Gestaltung der guten, friedlichen internationalen Beziehungen haben. Diese Ziele setzte sich das neulich gegründete Zivile Ungarische Institut für Europäische Musik- und Sportdiplomatie. Innerhalb der sanften Diplomatie sind Musik und Sport die Bereiche, die imstande sind, breite gesellschaftliche Gruppen, sogar ganze Nationen anzusprechen, und die gleichzeitig frei von sprachlichen Barrieren sind.

Das Institut veranstaltet in Zusammenarbeit mit der Andrássy Universität Budapest eine zweitägige Konferenz am 22. und 23. November. Am 22. November findet eine wissenschaftliche Tagung als Begleitprogramm zum Galaabend „Dank! Merci! Gracias!” statt. Mit der Gala möchten wir unsere Reverenz und Dankbarkeit den holländischen, spanischen  und schweizerischen Sportlern erweisen, die wegen der blutigen Niederschlagung der ungarischen Revolution die Olympischen Spiele in Melbourne boykottierten (siehe www.dankmercigracias.hu). Auch einige damals qualifizierten, aber ferngebliebenen Sportler nehmen an der Konferenz teil, die die Auseinandersetzung mit den folgenden Themen erzielt: Ist der Boykott ein sinnvolles Mittel bei den Olympischen Spielen, die als bedeutendstes gemeinschaftliches Ereignis der Nationen fungiert? Welche Folgen hat der Boykott auf das Leben, die Karriere der Sportler und die Zukunftsperspektiven des Sportlebens des Landes? Welche anderen Mittel stehen der Sportpolitik zum Ausdruck der Solidarität zur Verfügung?

Bei der Gala der Danksagung spielt die Musik neben den Sportlern die Hauptrolle. Neben den Veranstaltern der Hungarian FolkEmbassy werden das Duett Veronika Harcsa – Bálint Gyémánt sowie Szilvia Bognár, Mónika Lakatos, Róbert Vidák, Miklós Lakatos und ihre Band mit schweizerischen und französischen Liedern aus 1956 auftreten. Durch die öffentliche Gala mit der Teilnahme von anerkannten ungarischen Künstlern soll die Tatsache des Boykotts in der Öffentlichkeit Ungarns und der drei Länder bewusst gemacht werden, als ob eine Gedenkfeier stattfinden würde; die Gala zeigt demnach, wie die Theorie der Musikdiplomatie in die Praxis umgesetzt werden kann.

Die Effektivität der Musikdiplomatie kommt aber nicht nur durch die Vermittlung von historischen Fakten zum Ausdruck, die durch die von Musik eröffneten emotionalen Kanäle zugänglich werden. Über die unterschiedlichen Methoden gab Professorin Rebekah Ahrendt (Yale Univesity) 2014 Forschungsarbeiten heraus; sie wird die Konferenz per Videoverbindung beginnen. Das Zivile Ungarische Institut für Europäische Musik- und Sportdiplomatie setzt sich die wissenschaftliche Forschung und die regionale Integration des in den anglosächsischen Gebieten bereits verbreiteten Begriffs „music diplomacy” zum Ziel. Die Konferenz kann als erster Schritt betrachtet werden, die sich dem Thema aus drei Perspektiven annähert: zuerst behandeln wir die geschichtlichen Beispiele, dann hören wir uns die Erfahrungen der Diplomaten und der Künstler an, schließlich untersuchen wir die regionalen (Visegrád+: V4-Länder und die Donaustaaten) Möglichkeiten des Wissenschaftszweigs.
